A three-vehicle accident on Viroqua's south side, Monday morning, left a La Crosse man dead and two Soldiers Grove residents injured.

The Viroqua Police Department reported that a pickup truck driven by Denver L. McDowell, 86, La Crosse, was southbound on on Hwys. 14/61/27 on the south side of Viroqua at 7:10 a.m.

McDowell’s truck went into the northbound lane and first struck a northbound minivan driven by Bailey Dull, 24, of Soldiers Grove. The truck then struck another northbound car driven by Terry Barr, 46, Soldiers Grove.

“The truck was going southbound down a hill and, for whatever reason, went into the northbound lane and struck two other vehicles,” Viroqua Police Chief Mark Rahr said.

Both Dull and Barr were taken to Vernon Memorial Healthcare by Tri-State Ambulance with multiple injuries. Dull was treated and released. Barr was transferred to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, where he was reported in serious condition, Monday afternoon.

McDowell was pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Coroner Janet Reed.

Assisting at the scene was Readstown EMS, the Viroqua Fire Department, the Vernon County Sheriffs Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

It marks the first fatal vehicle accident in the city of Viroqua since 2000.
