The award-winning film “Keeping the Lights On” will be shown at the Vernon Square Cinema on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m.
The free public showing will be followed by a short talk by Viroqua town resident and retired geologist from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Kelvin Rodolfo.
He will talk about dealing with coal ash by-products safely and beneficially because he is very familiar with the “karst” geology of the Driftless area—limestone and similar rocks honeycombed with caves and underground passages that allow water to rapidly percolate into groundwater aquifers.
The film was produced by Gretta (Wing) Miller and Aarick Beher of Madison. It was chosen as one of the six “must see” films at the 10th Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison. It also was chosen as Best Documentary at the Wildwood Film Festival in Appleton.
The film made the Sierra Club of Wisconsin aware of the issue of waste disposal at the proposed coal plant in Cassville.
