Two Westby Area School Board seats will be up for re-election during the spring election on April 7, 2009. Incumbants, David Eggen, representing the Westby attendance area in Seat #3 and Tracy Cade, representing an at-large board position in Seat #5, must file re-election papers before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 if they wish to vie for re-election. Anyone wishing to challenge Eggen or Cade for a seat on the school board must also file candidacy papers by Jan. 6.

During the short November meeting the board congratulated the cast and crew of the high school musical, Man of La Mancha for their fine work. The board also approved a transfer request from Khris and Liz Kelba, to have their 4-year-old son attend Coon Valley Elementary School, where his mother is on staff and close to where his current day-care provider resides, instead of Westby Elementary School where he would be enrolled according to residence location.

The board also discussed a new course proposal offering students a Probability and Statistics course to be taught by Keith Kenyon. The board will review the proposal and act on the item in December.

The board did approve two new class courses for Advanced Physical Science and Honors Chemistry which were recommended by administration in October. The Advanced Physical Science course will be taught by Heidi Hamilton and begin in the fall of 2009, while the Honors Chemistry course will be taught by Lori A. Martin and be offered the first semester of 2009.

The short meeting ended with a discussion on strategic planning, a goals-based plan which looks at the mission of the school district and how to fulfill the goals set forth in the mission statement now and in the future.

The December school board meeting will be held in Westby at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8.
