The 1999 Northern Wisconsin Tobacco Exposition and sample judging have been postponed indefinitely because of a lack of case weather needed to strip tobacco.

Last Thursday afternoon, December 31, an original mural by artist Dan Nilles of rural Westby was unveiled on the side of DiSciascio’s Inn in Coon Valley. The mural commemorates the 150th anniversary of the founding of Coon Valley.

The first major snowstorm of 1999 fell last weekend dumping 9 inches of snow resulting in drifts and piles of plowed snow around Westby.

Westby Mayor Dan Jefson has declined to run again for mayor. Alderperson Ron Paulsrud and Westby resident Charles Suer have both filed to run for the office.

25 Years Ago

Last Tuesday Lilah Swiggum of Westby became the owner of the beautiful quilt which has been displayed in Vosseteig’s window in Westby. The quilt was a project of the Order of the Eastern Star, Viroqua.

Winners of the Christmas Drawing at the Westby Co-op Credit Union were Valerie Klum, daughter of James and Mary Klum of Viroqua and Travis Ezelle, son of Bonnie Ezelle of Westby.

The Westby Kiwanis Club named Cathryn Perkins, daughter of LeRoy and Donna Perkins of Westby, as its December Student of the Month.

State Representative Brian D. Rude (R-Coon Valley) has announced he will be a candidate for the State Senate seat being vacated by Senator Paul Offner, (D-La Crosse).

50 Years Ago

National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago was a week of inspiration, festivity and friendliness for local girl Marlene Skolas.

Kay E. Knutson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Knutson, Westby, a student at the University of Wisconsin, has been awarded sophomore honors for excellence of work in the State University’s College of Letters and Science.

Our Savior’s Lutheran church was the scene of a pretty wedding at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Eve when Nancy Ann Borgen, daughter of Mrs. Catherine Borgen and the late Ralph Borgen, became the bride of Alvin Klahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Klahn of Viroqua, the Rev. J.O. Paulsrud receiving the vows.

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pederson have been notified that their son, Roderick, who is stationed with the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, left on Monday for Cuba.

75 Years Ago

The Coon Valley State Bank, with its Westby station, is an institution that has been declared safe and sound and one that the people need have no fear of. The city of Westby and the entire community may well feel thankful and take pride in the fact that we now have a bank that is deserving of our confidence.

South Ridge Ladies’ Aid will meet at the Mrs. Anton Johnson farm home on Friday, January 12. Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Oscar Ihle and Mrs. Helmer Holter are the hostesses.

Miss Leona Hughes, who has been working in La Crosse, came home to be with her mother, Mrs. Walter Hughes, who fell at her home the Saturday before Christmas, breaking bones in both of her lower limbs.

Miss Margaret Buros entertained last Saturday at a miscellaneous shower for Mrs. Theron Phillips, who was before her marriage on December 24th, Miss Inge Eie. She was the recipient of many lovely gifts and a delicious lunch was served by the hostess.
